在回顾了3/13/2018那天晚上HB1461公开听证会上发生的事情后，我决定写这封信给你，表达我的担忧。
首先，我认为听证会的目的是委员们听取公民和社区的意见和反馈，而不是阻止他们表达自己的想法;然而，我强烈地感到一些委员会成员试图通过提问来刁难误导我们，很多问题都是不适宜的，与听证目的背道而驰。
其次，委员们与我们团队的根本区别在于对移民法的基本了解和对普通外国人如何通过正规法律程序成为美国公民的了解。许多委员会成员可能不知道，许多遵纪守法的公民都是经过漫长而严格的程序才获准进入美国并合法留在美国的。来美国之前，外国人必须前往美国驻该国的大使馆，根据个人情况申请适当的签证，并且不能保证他或她将获得签证。没有签证，任何人都无法合法进入美国。即使某人有幸获得签证，也可能是一种旅游签证，只允许在美国逗留几周，或者学生签证只能逗留几年，直到他或她完成学业。签证各种各样，都有时间限制。之后签证到期，他或她必须离开该国或有正当理由重新申请;否则，他/她在美国的逗留就会变成非法。
对我而言，这是常识，我从来没有想过，没有有效的签证，我或任何其他人可以前往任何其他国家旅行。然而，听到我们的一些委员认为，每个人都有权为了更好的生活跨越国界到另一个国家，无视移民法，我感到震惊。我非常困惑！对我来说，选择违法或遵守法律有明显的区别。这是一个要承担后果的深思熟虑以后有意识地做的决定。全球有数十亿人，其中许多人都有美国梦。想像一下，如果他们都蜂涌而至，不走正当移民程序，美国能收纳多少？另外，美国如何展现它崇尚的公平？对那些守移民法，老老实实排队移民的人，什么是公平？除非废除移民法，否则你怎么能说服人们继续遵守移民法？
如前所述，这是纯粹的逻辑，而不是政治。
我们团队的一些人来自中国。我们从孩童时代就被教育要平等，公平和爱。我们反对HB1461不是因为我们没有慈悲或爱;相反，这是因为美国今天发生的事情让我们想起几十年前中国发生的事情。那是一段让人痛心的历史。
意识形态和口号拯救不了一个国家。
没有法律，民主，自由和公正都是空谈。
我坚信立法者应该尊重法律。如果立法者不尊重法律，或者他们认为人们可以随意选择遵循或者违抗哪条法律，那么立法者的工作就毫无意义。如果立法者不喜欢某一特定法律，他们应该努力改变它，而不是因为不喜欢而故意破坏它。
我希望你们再次认真听取我们见证，并对HB1461投反对票。

Dear Judiciary Committee members,
After looking back on what happened during the public hearing on HB1461 on 3/13/18, I decided to write this letter to you to express my concerns.
First, I believe that the purpose of the hearing is for committee members to listen to different opinions and feedback from citizens and communities and not to stop them from conveying their thoughts; however, I strongly felt that some committee members were trying to mislead us by asking questions that were not appropriate for the hearing.
Second, the fundamental difference between committee members and our group lies on the basic understanding of immigration law and knowledge of the procedure on how an ordinary foreigner can become a U.S. citizen through regular legal process. Many of the committee members might not know that it is a lengthy and rigorous process that many law-abiding people went through to obtain permission to enter and stay legally in the United States. To come to the United States, a foreigner has to go to the U.S. embassy in that country, apply for a proper visa according to his or her personal case, and there is no guarantee that he or she will get the visa. Without a visa, nobody can enter the U.S. legally. Even if someone is lucky enough to obtain a visa, it might be a visitor visa that allows a person to stay in the United States for only a few weeks or a student visa for a few years until he or she finishes school, etc. After the visa expires, he or she has to leave the country or reapply for it with a valid reason; otherwise, his/her stay in the U.S. becomes illegal .
For me , this is common sense and it never crossed my mind that it is okay for me or any other person to travel into any other country without a valid visa. Nevertheless, I was shocked to hear that some of our committee members thought that everyone had a right to cross over borders to another country for a better life and disregard the immigration law. I was immensely puzzled! To me, there is a clear difference between choosing to break or follow the law. It is a counscious decision that comes with consequences. There are billions of people around the world and many of them have the American dream. Imagine if they all come here and stay without proper procedure; how many can the United States take in for good? Plus, how do you exhibit fairness to the lawful people who have waited in line for years? Unless you abolish immigration law, how can you persuade people to respect the law any further?
This is pure logic, not politics, as previously stated.
Some people from our group came from China. We were taught about equality, equity, and love since we were little children. We are opposing HB1461 not because we don’t have compassion or love; rather , it is because what is happening today in the U.S. reminds us of what happened in China decades ago. Ideology doesn’t save a country.
Without the law, democracy, liberty, freedom, and justice are in vain.
I strongly believe that lawmakers should respect the law. If lawmakers don’t respect the law, or they think people can choose which law to follow and which law to defy, then their job is meaningless. If lawmakers don’t like a particular law, they should work to change it, not break it on purpose simply because they don’t like it.
I hope that you listen seriously to our testimonies again and vote “No” to HB1461.
