On Sunday, Jewish and AAPI leaders from the Greater Washington and San Francisco areas met at Washington, D.C. to network and strengthen cooperation and collaboration on issues of common concerns. At this Summit, the leaders discussed how much the Jewish and AAPI communities share cultures and interests and how the leaders can work together and support each other to fight against Asian or Jewish hate crimes and discrimination and promote issues beneficial to both Jewish and AAPI communities. With Secretary of State Susan Lee, the Chinese American leaders from the Washington area attending were, among others, Dr. Ping Lu, President of the Chinese Alumni Associations of Greater Washington, Jeremy Wu, Committee for 100, Yi Shen, Montgomery County AAPI Liaison, Lisa Liu and Sammy Tse, Honorary Presidents of US-China Association of Commerce and Industry, Nicholas Li, Washington D.C. Mayor’s Office AAPI Liaison, Chilling Tong, President of Asian American Chamber of Commerce, and Larry La, President of Meiwah Restaurant. The AAPI and Jewish leaders are planning to meet at least four times per year to strengthen the cooperation and relationship between the AAPI and Jewish communities.
Secretary of State Susan Lee and Dr. Ping Lu, who assisted Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington D.C. (umbrellas organization for all or almost all Jewish organizations in the Washington area) leaders organizing this Summit, stated, “Through working together with the Jewish community in the Washington area, the Chinese American and other AAPI leaders can better advance the interests and rights of the Chinese American and other AAPI communities, including fighting against discrimination and hate crimes against Chinese Americans and immigrants.” Lisa Liu added, “Coalition building is a key to expanding the Chinese American community’s influence and creating a better future for our children.”
