Crossing Mountains and Seas: Fulfilling Our Promise

Standing on the playground of Malipo County First Primary School, we--- a group of young volunteers from Washington, D.C. Capital Youth Outreach Club (CYOC) --- felt a deep connection as the sunlight filtered through the leaves. At that moment, I truly appreciated the value of cultural exchange and heritage.
Two years ago, we first met the children from Malipo through online video calls. We were curious and excited as we glimpsed into each other’s lives. Through the screen, we saw lively festival celebrations, colorful Yunnan rice dishes, and fragrant Yunnan rice noodles. Now, experiencing these moments in person brought us great anticipation and joy.
Arriving in Malipo felt like stepping into a vibrant cultural landscape. During the welcoming ceremony, we were warmly received with the spirit of “Isn’t it delightful to have friends come from afar?” I recognized Wei Qihang, who was my age and wore glasses like mine. He had taught me several Chinese words during our video calls. We shared our talents, from juggling to violin solos, and I recited “A Young China.-by Liang Qichao”. We learned Chinese calligraphy, tried stilt walking, participated in Board Shoe races, and made traditional Zhuang flower rice. Together, we planted a “Friendship Tree” at the new campus of Malipo County First Primary School.
From practicing calligraphy to the fun of Board Shoe races, from making Zhuang flower rice to planting the “Friendship Tree,” each experience was meaningful. These activities were not just cultural exchanges; they were genuine interactions that deepened our understanding and friendship. The moment we planted the “Friendship Tree” with the children from Malipo was particularly special. It was more than just planting a sapling; it symbolized our growing friendship and the continuity of cultural exchange. I believe this tree will thrive, just as our friendship will, enduring through time.
This Yunnan journey has highlighted the importance of cultural exchange. It’s not only about sharing knowledge but also about connecting on an emotional level. Through these interactions, we learn to respect, appreciate, and embrace different cultures with an open heart.
As a young Chinese-American, I feel both proud of my heritage and responsible for sharing it. I am confident that with love, dreams, and action, Chinese culture will continue to make an impact on the world stage. I look forward to future opportunities for cultural exchange, whether near or far, online or in person, knowing that our shared experiences will keep the spirit of heritage alive.
A Flavorful Journey Across Cultures
— My Authentic “Crossing-the-Bridge” Rice Noodle Experience in Yunnan, China, Reflection
Daniel Guo
Yunnan, here I come!
As a Chinese-American pre-teenager raised in the United States, I’ve always been curious about China. This summer, from June 19th to 25th, I had the privilege of embarking on an unforgettable journey to Yunnan, China, with a group of friends from Washington, D.C. Capital Youth Outreach Club (CYOC). The trip was filled with excitement, and one dish that left a lasting impression on me was the authentic Yunnan “Crossing-the-Bridge” rice noodles.
On the third day of our trip, we arrived in Mengzi, a scenic town known as the birthplace of Yunnan rice noodles. Stepping into a noodle shop filled with rich aromas, I was greeted by meticulously prepared broth. The surface of the broth appeared calm, but that was not the case—the thick layer of hot oil maintained the soup’s temperature above 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit). The culinary legend of “cooking without fire (无火烹饪)” fascinated me.
I carefully added chicken, flower petals, bean sprouts, and other ingredients into the steaming broth. In an instant, they cooked under the intense heat, revealing the unique charm of Crossing-the-Bridge rice noodles. The bowl before me was a vibrant canvas: red chili oil, green scallions, yellow bean sprouts, white rice noodles, and those thin, tender meat slices interwoven into an enticing display. Carefully lifting a chopstick, I tasted the noodles. First, the silky-smooth texture, followed by the rich broth and the harmonious blend of seasonings—a sensory feast on my palate. At that moment, I felt transported back hundreds of years to the heart of ancient China and the southwestern frontier. I sensed the journey of rice noodle craftsmanship from the central plains to the borderlands, seamlessly merging with the dietary habits of local ethnic groups.
As a Chinese-American, I take pride in my cultural heritage, especially when savoring such authentic and delicious traditional Chinese foods. My heart brims with admiration for Chinese cuisine. Crossing-the-Bridge rice noodles are not merely a dish; they embody cultural heritage, allowing me to deeply appreciate the vastness and inclusivity of Chinese culture.
This journey to Yunnan not only satisfied my culinary curiosity but also ignited my love and pride for Chinese culture. Wherever I go, this passion and respect for food and culture will remain my most treasured wealth.
