到底该用哪个英文词？ Word Choice Matters

所以，construction 不是中文“建设”。
那么，“经济建设”应该怎么翻译？
用英文的相应表达方法：

那么，“国防建设”呢？怎么翻？同理，用英文的相应表达方法：

下面的“建设”翻译能帮助建立一些语感：
Ø 中国这几十年一直致力于经济建设。
For the past decades, China has committed itself to economic development.
Ø 我们要加强国防建设。
We must strengthen national defense.

Ø 领导班子要重视员工的政治思想建设。
The leadership should make a sincere effort in equipping staffs with correct political ideas.
（翻成 political and ideological construction，中国人看得懂，但洋人只能干瞪眼。最多也只能猜出中文是说：某些政治观点是怎么形成的 ––– how political ideas are constructed。）
Ø 我们要加强领导班子的建设。
We must double our efforts in building an effective leadership.
Ø 铁路建设是今后五年的工作重点。
Developing the railway industry will be the focus of our work for the next five years.
（翻成 railway construction，就成了：修建铁路、铺枕木、建车站等工程。）
Ø 市场建设是关乎经济发展的大事。
Building market mechanisms is of important significance to economic development.
（翻成 market construction，不用说，也很清楚：规划地界、盖商场、修建停车场。相信读者能有足够的英文语感辨别出market construction不对劲。）
Ø 各级领导要重视党的建设。
Leaders at all levels must give importance to strengthening the leadership of the Party.
Ø 这些管理标准突出了机关的政治建设。
These management standards highlight the political agenda of the agency.

结合：combine
从翻译的角度讲，中文的“结合”基本有两个意思，也就有两个翻译。
一是“组合、合并、联合”的意思，用 combine 翻译就够了。如：几种材料结合在一起；二是“从 … 角度看、考虑到 …、就 …言、鉴于 … ”的意思，再用 combine 就麻烦了。
正是第二个意思的“结合”导致许多误译。
举个例子吧。下面这句中文怎么翻？
Ø 结合你近一段的表现，公司领导认为，你不适合再留在公司。
In light of your recent performance, the company management agreed that you should no longer work in the company.
如果把“结合你最近一段的表现”翻成 Combining your recent performance, the company management agreed that … 可以勉强读作：把你最近一段的表现都合并起来，我们考虑 …。
显然，意思拧了。原文不是说“把最近一段的表现合并起来”，而是说“参考你的表现”。
类似因为用 combine 而把意思翻拧了的例子很多。
下面句子中的语境可以告诉读者，“结合”该不该用 combine。
Ø 管理人员应结合市场情况，研究公司的运作策略。
1. Managers should incorporate market situations in working out company’s operation strategies.
2. Managers should take into account market situations when examining company’s operation strategies.
Ø 我们要结合他的工作表现，考虑是否给他加薪。
We should take a look at his performance when deciding whether to give him a raise.
Ø 实际操作也可结合具体训练课题进行。
Hands-on operation can be done by integrating it with specific training subjects.
Ø 员工的营销训练要与产品性能、市场需求紧密结合。
Staff’s marketing training should revolve around products features and market demands.
Ø 本文结合早期的科研结果，深刻分析了信息市场的变化。
With early research findings taken into consideration, this article offers a profound analysis of the changes in the information market.
Ø 如果将两组人马结合起来，我们就有了一支最有竞争力的团队。
If we combine the two teams, we will have a most competitive team.

解决：solve; resolve
这里主要讲“解决”和“问题”的搭配。
英文有两个“解决”—— solve 和 resolve，两个“问题”—— problem 和 issue。它们各解决各的问题。
先说“问题”（详见“问题”一栏）。读者先要判断，所谓“问题”是 issue 还是 problem，然后才能断定用哪个“解决”。
那么，哪个“解决”配哪个“问题”呢？
先打一个岔，question 也是“问题”，但这个“问题”不需要“解决”，而是需要“回答”。对翻译来说，这个“问题”不是问题。
再回到上面“解决”和“问题”的搭配用法。跟 solve 搭配的是 problem，也就是 solve problems。用 solve 解决的问题，涉及数学问题、谜语、疑惑、需要纠正的问题。解决的方式是，用正确的取代不正确的。解决的结果要对错分明、黑白清楚。
Resolve 说的“解决”就不一样了。跟 resolve 搭配的是 issue，也就是 resolve issues。用 resolve 解决的不一定涉及是非对错，而是合适不合适、观点不同的问题。解决的方式是协商、妥协。
所以，到底该用 solve 还是 resolve 翻译“解决”，要看“解决”的问题属于 issue 还是 problem。
上述“解决”好像刚刚理顺说清，中文又冒出一些“解决”。看看下面的“解决”，怎么翻？
Ø 我们终于成功地解决了精确定位、可靠导航等关键技术。
1. We have finally made successful breakthroughs in the critical technologies such as precision positioning and reliable navigation.
2. We have finally successfully acquired the critical technologies such as precision positioning and reliable navigation.

上面的翻译根本没用 solve 或 resolve，因为问题是，我们说：解决难题、解决困难、解决技术问题；但是，我们解决技术吗？
上面的中文句子读起来地道流畅，为什么要翻成英文时，“解决技术”就显出不对劲了呢？因为，在中文语感下，“解决技术”的本意遮盖了“解决技术”的字面不妥。中国人看到“解决技术”，理解的却是：获得了这方面技术，或解决了这个技术还存在的问题。
可是，翻成英文的 solve the technologies，却带不出中文的语感和内涵。中文“解决”有“搞定了、掌握了”的意思；英文的 solve 则没有。
再看一例“解决”：
Ø 社会工作者要解决好主动询问和被动解答的关系。
Social workers must make conscious efforts in deciding whether they should reach out to those in need, or simply sit back and wait for people to come for help.
