Reflection of CCACC VITA site
The first time I heard about CCACC's VITA program was during the tax season of 2015. At that time, I was a part time employee of the largest for-profit tax preparation company in the country. This was my first job as an income tax preparer. Since I was a first year tax associate, I generally handled simple cases and my clients were often of low income. I felt so bad to charge them a fee for a simple tax return, however I had no choice.
Because of this guilt, I didn't continue with that company for the following tax season. I decided to work as a volunteer instead and sought to CCACC work as a VITA volunteer. I wanted to help those who recently emigrated from China and have difficulty understanding English. In February this year, I successfully became a VITA volunteer at CCACC.
I feel good about working here for the past six Saturday mornings. The reasons being that the operation I am associated with has the following attributes:
1. Client satisfaction. Taxpayers were very satisfied with the tax preparation service we provided. We were in compliance with the guidelines but also tactically handled each case with providing convenience to our taxpayers in mind. So far, there have been no unhappy clients. In fact, there were quite a few taxpayers who told me that our service was excellent, courteous and efficient.
2. Teamwork. This year, the CCACC VITA team had more than twenty volunteers signed up and each Saturday morning, there has been close to twenty volunteers on duty. We come from different business backgrounds, with different styles in decision making and problem solving skills and, yet, we work collaboratively in providing excellent services to the taxpayers seeking assistance. At times, disruptions occur, but, quickly, they are handled nicely. We accommodate each other well.
3. Commitment. Our tax assistance service is open to the public on Saturday morning during February thru early April. There are three volunteers who not only prepare tax returns during morning, they continue working in the afternoon to perform quality reviews on all completed returns from the morning before forwarding to IRS by e-filing. They devote much more hours than the other volunteers. In addition, there are returning volunteers who continue to give their time to support VITA program at CCACC years after years. Their level of commitments has earned them my respect.
Overall, I am pleased to become a VITA volunteer, helping those elders and low-income-tax residents to save money when filing income tax returns. This is what I want to do and I am glad I am doing it. (Alan Ng)
