到底该用哪个英文词？ Word Choice Matters

研究：research; study
这两个英译词都是“研究”，但绝不是百分之百的同义词。它俩各作各的研究。
Research 讲的“研究”侧重收集资料；Study 讲的“研究”侧重分析资料。
您会问了，难道收集资料不包括研究分析吗？包括。但是侧重不同。Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 这样解释 research：
a careful study of a subject, especially in order to discover new facts or information about it。

注意到 discover 这个词了吧。这就是说，research 说的“研究”是为了找资料。在英语国家，人们在不知道用什么办法时，常说：Let me do some research。意思是，让我找找，看有什么方法可用；表达的就是“寻找信息”。
而 Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 对 study 的解释则是：examine something carefully in order to understand it。注意到 examine 这个词了吧。这就是说，study 说的“研究”是为了弄明白已经找到的信息。
也就是说，research 侧重“调查、查考、查找、探寻、找资料”；study 侧重“分析、研判、探究、研读、弄懂资料”。
还是举个例子吧。美国的《今日美国》报（USA Today）2016 年 7 月 13 日，报道国会众议员 Blackburn 对克林顿基金会的评述：
The Clinton Foundation claims to engage in study and research in its filings with the IRS。

意思是，美国前总统克林顿设立了一个基金会，叫克林顿基金会。该基金会在向联邦税务局备案的资料中，称该基金会从事调研。
Blackburn 议员分别用 research 和 study 来表达“调研”的两层意思：调查和研究，也就是说，克林顿基金会调查（research）目前世界存在哪些挑战，收集资料，整理数据，然后研究分析（study）这些资料，提出对策，供政府和相关机构参考。
所以，research 表达的是“发现问题”；study 表达的是“分析问题”。
再看一些例子：
Ø 多少年来，心理学家们一直在探究人们说谎的原因。研究表明，人们说谎是出于各种各样的原因。
For decades, psychologists have been researching why people cheat. Their studies show that people often are pulled by multiple reasons to cheat.
（“探究”是 research，是“找原因”；“研究”是 study，是“解释找到的原因”。）
Ø 一位美国高中生赢得头等奖，因为她的研究发现了精确找到癌症肿瘤的方法。据信，大约还需要 25 年左右的时间，她的研究成果才能用于治疗病人。
A high school student from the US won a top prize for her research that found ways to target cancer tumors with precision. It is believed that it could take about twenty-five years before her research can help patients.
（两处“她的研究”都是 research，表达的是这个高中生找到的治疗方法。）
Ø 通过研究它们之间的异同，我们发现，它们属同一种植物。
Through studying their differences and similarities, we found that they belong to the same plant species.
（这里的“研究”是 study，显然说的是“分析、解释”它们之间的异同。）
Ø 我们要广泛研究古今中外案例。

（这里的“研究”用 research，是要表达“查找、收集资料”这层意思。）

（这里的“研究”用 study，是要表达“分析、理解资料”这层意思。）
Ø 学生每学期要交两份研究报告。
Students must turn in two research papers each semester.
（这里的“研究”用 research，是要表达“收集、查找资料”这层意思。学校的研究报告是训练学生收集论证材料的方法。）
Ø 研究结果表明，家中过滤水比瓶装水干净。
Research findings show that filtered tap water is cleaner than bottled water.
（这里的“研究”用 research，也是要表达“收集到的资料数据”这层意思。)
Ø 美国研究所有很多研究项目。
The Institute of American Studies hosts many research projects.
（这里的“研究”用了 studies 和 research。Study 是说“分析、搞清楚、弄明白”的意思；research projects 是说“收集论证资料”。）
Ø 刚才出了一个大事故，咱们马上开会研究对策。
There was serious accident just now. Let’s meet right away to find a solution.
（用 study a solution 就错了，意思就成了：已经有对策了，会上需要看看是否能用。原文不是这个意思；用research 也不好，research a solution 有点过于学究性。火烧眉毛的关头，容不得这么学术性地调查研究。其实，这里的“研究”就是：大家伙当场说说，有什么解决方案。）
Ø 破译专家被请来逐字研究此文件。
Cryptographers are called in to study this document word by word.
（study 表达的是“分析、研判”的意思。）
Ø 在此方案公布前，你们还要就它的可行性作一番研究。

（例 1 的“研究”用 research，是要表达“收集资料”的意思。看看哪些可行，有无先例，有无案例可参考，有无失败或成功的例子。例 2 的“研究”用 studies，是要表达“分析”，看看此方案是否能付诸实施。当然“找数据”和“分析数据”常常是并行的。在上下文明确的情况下，用了 research 也不会排除 study 的意思。语言运用是灵活的；翻译皆如此。）
Ø 此项目的可行性报告我们研究过了，认为它没有考虑到未来两年的物价飙升问题。
We have studied the feasibility report of this program, and concluded that it fails to take into account the price hike in the next two years.
（这里的“研究”用 study，是要表达“分析可行性报告”的意思。）
当然，在日常表达中，“研究”不只在 research 和 study 两个译词中打转。它的意思很多，译法也多:
Ø 你的情况我们得先研究研究再给你答复。
We will review your case before we give you an answer.
Ø 领导会仔细研究一下你的建议。
The management will look into your suggestions.
Ø 经过再三研究，我们决定给你加薪。
After a careful review, we have decided to give you a raise.
Ø 这样吧，我们研究研究再说。
Well, we will give it some thought first and get back to you.
验证：verify; validate
这两个英文词说的是同一回事：证明某个东西、某件事是真的。
但是，它俩验证的对象不一样。
比如，在计算机测试和工程领域，verify 和 validate 意思一样，但是“验证”的内容不一样。Verify 是验证一个产品是否制作正确；validate 是验证一个产品是否符合客户要求。
